CLEVELAND TYAGARAJA ARADHANA 2003

If there is one festival in the world other than the December Music season to which music lovers across the globe throng, it is the Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana. Having started as a small community affair 26 years ago, this festival has grown to such gigantic proportions today that people consider it a privilege to be a part of it.

Last year's Silver jubilee witnessed a 10-day affair, and this trend will be continued this year. While 87-year old veteran vocalist T Mukta was one of the huge draws of last year's festival along with octogenarian doyen R K Srikantan, this year's special includes a concert featuring the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman. But Srikantan fans, don't despair. He will perform on the opening day itself!

The other highlights of this year's festival are:

  • There will be a total of 38 events during the 10 days.

  • The number of artistes to be featured is a staggering 108! Of these 70 are being flown in from India while 38 are residents of North America.

  • The feminists cannot complain either! The events featuring men and women are equally divided!

  • Veteran accompanists T K Murthy, Trichy Sankaran and M S Anantaraman are also participating in this year's festival.

  • The festival features 5 generations of artistes.

  • For the second consecutive year, there will be lecture demonstration sessions in the mornings by leading artistes on weekdays.

  • The birth centenary of Gotuvadyam Narayana Iyengar and the Diamond Jubilee of Kalki magazine will be celebrated.

As has been the practice for sometime, the Aradhana Committee recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of performing arts through a series of awards. The awardees of this year are R K Srikantan (Sangeeta Ratnakara), R Rhadha (Nritya Ratnakara), Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty (Seva Ratna), S Rajaram (Nritya Seva Ratna) and Bhargavi Sundararajan (Kala Seva Mani). A special award will also be given to a teacher, based on nominations received from all over the continent.

The organisers are offering several interesting packages for music lovers. You could get more info about them through an email to Toronto Venkataraman or Karthik Venkataraman. Here is the schedule for this year.
