MADURAI SUNDAR - AN INTELLIGENT MUSICIAN

The concert of Madurai R Sundar, a disciple of T N Seshagopalan, exhibited a high standard in his concert at the Music Academy on the 20th December 2000. His voice is all-powerful and expressive beyond the madhya sthayi panchama, with an easy reach in the higher octaves. Below madhya sthayi panchama though, there was not much vitality. Suggestive ideas were however not lacking.

Sundar exhibits an intelligent and intellectual approach to anything he handles. Kambhoji could have been a little more elaborate. The Pallavi, 'Kanjadalayatakshi kamakshi' was short and crisp. The percussionists did their best to enhance the total effect of the concert.

Bombay Balaji deserves a special mention - he is a young and promising mridangist, being the disciple of the great maestro Palghat R Raghu.
